Institutional Accreditation
The University of Illinois Chicago is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has been continuously accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1970 and participates in the Open Pathway review cycle to maintain accreditation. UIC received its most recent reaffirmation of accreditation from HLC in July 2024. The university will undergo its next 10-year comprehensive review in 2033-2034, with the 4-year mid-cycle virtual Assurance Review scheduled for 2027-2028.
Programatic Accreditation
In addition to UIC’s institutional accreditation, several degree programs, schools, and colleges within UIC are accredited by programmatic and disciplinary accreditors recognized by CHEA or the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). HLC defines programmatic accreditation as a process in which programmatic accreditors (also known as specialized or professional accreditors) evaluate a specific program at an institution. Institutions pursue specialized accreditation to enhance a program’s quality and reputation and/or to meet specific licensing or hiring requirements set by state laws or employers.
The Specialized Accreditation Schedule lists accredited programs and the dates of their corresponding accreditation cycles.
Professional Licensure Disclosures
The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, specifically 34 CFR 668.43 (a) (5) (v) and 34 CFR 668.43 (c), require disclosures for educational programs that are designed to meet educational requirements for a specific license or certification that is required for employment in an occupation, or advertised as meeting professional licensure educational requirements. See the full list of UIC licensure or certification programs where the institution has determined whether each program meets or does not meet such requirements within and outside the state of Illinois.
